Hello, My name is MaryAnn, thank-you for taking the time to read this. I would like to write you a short letter about why I’m GIVING my beautiful art piece Emerald City Poppies away to you.
I really do love gardens! I have gardened as long as I can remember, some of my first memories were in the garden.
I have made art for almost as long as I have gardened! Painting gives me such joy!
Recently, my spouse of twenty-seven years and I divorced. I was left with the lion’s share of raising my three teens. On top of that, I bought a car, only to have it completely fall apart after two weeks of driving, costing me thousands. It's been a tough twelve months!
I bring it up, simply because you know what has kept me centered during this low time? You know what has kept me grounded through this hardship?
My garden.
There is something about having your hands and feet in the dirt that pulls your soul away from its panic to a place of peace and trust, even in the hardest times. There is something about the somatic experience of gardening that helps you hear the tender whispers of God or Presence or whatever you want to call it to your soul. The slow rote movements of gardening, they are like stakes pounded into the ground of our hearts, holding us securely. The trust in what has always been, that there will be a harvest, a culmination, a point to it all, this is the hope that helps us heal.
And what is harvested? Vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
Vegetables remind me of the sustenance we get along our journey, the food we need to complete the path laid out for us. Herbs, these are the little ebenezers, the sweet smelling memories we gather on our path.
And flowers? Well, the flowers are little packages of pure, colorful joy, are they not? Fleeting little beauties of color, sometimes so beautiful that they have a dream-like quality to them, a ‘heaven must be like this’ kinda quality.
Even in tough times, I still see a flower or two here and there to lift my spirit and bring me joy. I look for them. The more I look, the more I spot these colorful whispers of hope.
I think that the color and freshness of the garden grounds me, inspires me, and gives me hope. My flowers bloom the same time each year and so I have something to look forward to as a gardener. They are like little encouragements in flower form sent from above!
So, when I paint my flowers, I’m not just painting flowers, I am painting hope, and I invite you to experience this hope with me!
I would love to give a print of these poppies to you, to inspire you to always look for hope, no matter where you are!
Emerald City Poppies almost never was.
There I was, two o'clock in the morning and I'd been painting for hours! (Learning this special style of Fluid Acrylic painting isn't easy! I've basically originated it. That takes a lot of time and energy and a TON of scraping your canvas and starting over.)
I'd scraped the canvas a couple of times. I just couldn't get what I wanted, and yet I couldn't seem to let it go either. I began to scrape it again, wishing to trying again and a little voice in my head said, 'MaryAnn, just go to bed and see what it looks like in the morning.'
(You can see that scrape in the painting, btw, if you look hard enough. Do you see it?)
Reluctantly I listened and went to bed, When I woke up in the morning I was so glad that I listened to myself! There in front of me was this amazing painting, which, through tired, desperate eyes I couldn't see.
Those Emerald City Poppies worked their 'sleeping' magic and when I woke up, I had hope again!
For me, as a gardener and painter, when I look at this painting it gives me such joy! I hope it brings you the joy it did me when I woke up and took a second look!
Taking a second look never hurt anyone, did it?
Please enjoy this print and it's special message to you!
My poppies look so pretty in my living room! Very satisfied with this artist! S. Houser
Why give my art away?

REALLY!
I want to spread hope and beauty into the world. So, far, I have been able to give out 3000 art prints! That is 3000 spaces in the world my artwork hangs, offering hope and beauty!
Also, I believe that artwork should be able to be enjoyed by all, not just the wealthy. As an artist, I really hope that anyone who wants to enjoy my work has the ability to do so. Offering it for free helps me with this priority.
Lastly, giving my artwork to others extends my reach and connects me with more people. It gives you the opportunity to fall in love with my work and look for more! The more people who know who I am and what I do, the more I will be able to sell even more of my originals, and that excites me too!
Sounds like a win/win to me!

About MaryAnn
MaryAnn has been a self-taught artist her whole life, but decided to become professional during Covid. Since then MaryAnn has been perfecting her distinctive style and technique. Originally an abstract paint pour artist (yes, like the ones you see on social media) MaryAnn quickly tired of abstract and moved the techniques into her Impressionist Paintings. The Fluid Acrylic techniques give her paintings the movement, and ethereal quality you see, creating a mix of new and old. MaryAnn’s special one-of-a-kind techniques and style create a new twist on Contemporary Impressionism.
MaryAnn lives in Northern Idaho with her three teens, six chickens, three parakeets, two rabbits, and a few fish. Her garden is her pride and joy; it almost always has something noteworthy growing throughout the year.
MaryAnn is passionate about getting her art into the hands of those who want it; she firmly believes that beauty is what changes the world into a more humane place to be..
